Children Living with AIDS

Thursday, 08 April 2010 00:00

The first support group for children living with AIDS (CLWA) is held.

20 children of a school going age, from all over Ufafa Valley, who are HIV positive, attend a day long meeting at the Woza Moya Communty Centre. These new support group meetings will take place 4 time per year, during school holidays.

Woza Moya CCWs accompany the children to the centre. The programme for the day is both structured and unstructured allowing the children some leisure time to relax and play with each. The structured part of the day involves the children sitting in x2 circles / groups faciltated by Jane Nxasane and Thembi Mweli. The first group with Jane consists of children from 5 - 9 years, and the second group with Thembi has children 9 -15 years. Sue moves between the 2 groups.

Reflecting on how this first meeting went, Jane, Thembi and Sue are all struck by how open the children were, very quickly sharing and caring for one another. The children's own refelctions at the end of the day were clear and grateful for the opportunity for them to simply come together and to realise that they are not alone with their problems (of being HIV positve).
