Woza Moya – December 2009

It has been a year of much excitement and change at Woza Moya with the building of the new Play Centre, new permaculture gardens and a new access road. 2009 also saw Woza Moya being registered as a Section 21 Company on 21 June 2009; and PBO 18A Tax Exemption Status was granted on 8 December 2009. Our wonderful staff and care workers supported by our donors and volunteers have continued to make a difference in the lives of the people of the Ufafa Valley by providing quality care and support to those affected by HIV and AIDS and poverty.

These great achievements were made possible by the amazing goodwill and generosity of so many individuals. Woza Moya, on behalf of the Ufafa community, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for your continued support. Without all of you and your openhearted and openhanded support we could not do the work and serve and uplift and empower our community in this way. Siyabonga nonke!

Play Centre

With the generosity and hard work of Gavin Harrison and his Hawaiian friends and Patricia Shafer of Mothering across Continents, Woza Moya Project has received funds to build a Play Centre. Construction started in February 2009 and it was officially opened on 30th October 2009. This is for pre-schoolers with child minders trained in early childhood development (ECD). In the future it will also be an after school facility for Primary School children in the area, with a nutritious meal served to both groups. Funds are required on an on-going basis for the daily running costs of the centre and for future initiatives to expand the scope of the centre’s reach.

School Sponsorship Programme

Woza Moya Project has identified many orphaned and vulnerable children who need educational support in the Ufafa region. We ask sponsors to give a one off donation of R1000. This will cover school expenses, such as uniforms, shoes, tracksuits and stationary for one child for the year. Woza Moya will email you a short story about the child you are sponsoring. Over 400 children are currently being sponsored; there are many more on the waiting list. Please contact Ian Chambler for further information.

Other areas that require funding

  • Ongoing Operational Costs for community outreach meetings, such as food, materials, CBO Vehicle and Public Transport Costs, Staff and Care Workers
  • On going Administrations Costs for the Woza Moya Community Centre which serves as the hub for all community outreach activities, such as stationary, telecommunications, electricity, office equipment and maintenance.
  • Staff Development and Training Costs – on going training for all care workers and staff to keep the team well informed and abreast of all new information and skills.
  • 10 th year Celebrations in 2010 – a special Annual Report and Function
  • Existing programmes need to be expanded and developed, but this is all fund dependant. E.g. in addition to the 600 children already receiving assistance, 100 orphaned/vulnerable children in the community have been identified by the care workers and extra funding would allow us to respond to their needs as well.

I know we all want to feel like we can make a difference in other people's lives but we don't always have the time or know what to do. This is YOUR CHANCE to make a real difference. This is the request - donate R50 a month to this project and tell everyone you know - your clients, suppliers, colleagues, friends and family and ask them to do the same. If we could get 1,000 people to donate R50 a month we could raise R600, 000 in a year, and what a difference that would make to this community.

So that's the goal and the challenge! Together we CAN make a difference!
