Kokstad exchange visit

Wednesday, 10 February 2010 00:00

HBC staff at Woza Moya visit a HPCA partner in Kokstad, Tender Loving Care (TLC).

Sandy Dickson, Jane Nxsane, Sue Hedden and x2 Oxfam volunteers, Ivan and Elsa drive one hour to the town of Kokstad to visit anotehr NGO, TLC, run by a nursing sister, Theresa. TLC are also funded by HPCA.

The purpose for the exchange visit is for Woza Moya to learn how TLC manages to implement the Levels 1, 2, 3 of palliative care, as required by HPCA. HPCA suggested that we do this visit.

The visit was an eye-opener for us all. Firstly TLC is situated in the town of Kokstad with electricity, running water, good roads, hospital & clinic on their doorstep. TLC also employs a number of profesisonal nurses full time. They have the financial backing of the Catholic church and are currently building a massive all purpose community center costing about 20 million rand!

It was therefore no surprise that they have no problem implementing all the levels of care as required by HPCA!
