Eight farmers passed on the gift of 18 egg laying chickens to eight new farmers at the "Passing on the Gift" ceremony held at Woza Moya Community Centre. This is an annual event which joyfully highlights the success of the partnership between Woza Moya and Heifer International South Africa which began in 2002.
Benedicta Memela welcomed all guests, including Management Committee, community members, S'bu Mkhize from AIDS Foundation of South Africa and two NGO's from Nqutu and Mzimkulu who had come to learn about Food Security. Heifer International South Africa was represented by Marisia Geracia, Executive Director and S'Thembiso Gasa, Field Officer. Marisia spoke about their mission, in partnership with others, to promote community development, food security and environmental regeneration through sharing, caring and passing on the gift. The organization celebrated its 10 year anniversary this year and are currently operating in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal, having served over 2000 families in the past 10 years.
Another speaker was Ms Connie from the Ixopo Department of Agriculture who made a strong appeal for Woza Moya to help the Department to get community members to use government services such as livestock innoculation; cattle dipping and rabies innoculations for dogs.
Thembi Nynekosi, HIV and AIDS Manager of World Vision came to observe Woza Moya's success in its Food Security programme.
